The sales process can take a matter of weeks or months depending on where the vessel is moored and the details of the purchase. Building a new yacht will always take longer than buying a yacht already on the water, but the advantage is you can put your own stamp on creating the yacht of your dreams. A full custom-built yacht can take three years or more to complete, but there are many yacht builders offering what are known as platform or semi-custom options that reduce this build time considerably. This option involves a basic hull and superstructure with which you can still enjoy a high degree of customisation, especially with the interior, allowing you to sail away with a heavily personalised yacht with a greatly reduced build time. Another option is to buy a yacht on the brokerage market and then personalise it through a refit or refresh. A full refit might take as long as a new build but there are many layers of works you can opt to carry out, from simple interior updates to more involved structural or engineering projects.
